Covid-19 leads to digitalization

The well known “corona-virus” ravages our world. What started as one case in China, has now spread to all continents, districts, and smaller islands on our planet. The world leaders are looking to China, and how they managed to get control of the spread in a relatively short time. China has found a way that works; Total lockdown.

While western countries are more scared to call total-lockdown for their citizens, many countries are now in a state of emergency. Some more than others, but schools and kindergartens that I know of are closed. This leads to the question, how can society live on behind closed doors? The answer to this question is digitalization.

"The corona-virus forces schools and many companies to digitalize, which is one of the few positive side effects of this terrible pandemic."

School staff around the world are now desperately trying to find alternative ways of continuing their teaching using technology. In some places, classes are held in video chatrooms. Pupils get tasks on an online teaching platform and use their computers to deliver their work to the same platform. I don’t know how well this home-school scheme works, but I absolutely believe it’s worth finding out. Digitalization is the future, and schools should not fall behind in the technological evolution. The corona-virus forces schools and many companies to digitalize, which is one of the few positive side effects of this terrible pandemic.

The pandemic also forces bigger and smaller companies around the world to be creative. How can they survive this mega-crisis? Never before has something like this happened, and company owners have to think outside the box to survive. How can they keep their employees working? How can they continue to make money? In desperate times, people are compelled to take chances they normally wouldn’t take, just to survive. Artists are having concerts live on Facebook, festivals are turning into online-festivals, and kids listen to live fairy tales read online.

"We look to the internet for answers, and in these desperate times- the internet is more than willing to help us!"

Suddenly, the internet offers so much more. We are so used to having so many things to do, that being bored is scary. We look to the internet for answers, and in these desperate times- the internet is more than willing to help us! We can see a general increase in webinar-popularity, and you can even take workout classes online!

I believe that the digitalization Covid-19 brought to the world has come to stay. People are now reaching for the internet in many new situations. When the world normalizes, people will not forget what they learned, and how the digitalization affected our lives. We will in this Covid-19 crisis get new expectations of what the internet can offer, and I believe the internet will meet these expectations.

PS: Please follow the advise given by the authorities to stop the spread of Covid-19!
